Using one of the many DIY websites out there I started using reusable dryer sheets a few months ago. Here’s a link from Homemade Mama’s that is very similar to what I’ve done.
For me, I got some “sham-wow” type cloths at the dollar store, and a jug container there as well, cut the cloths in half, and VOILA! They work wonderfully, they last forever, and your clothes smell fantastic!!!!
But what do you do when it’s cleaning day, hence a LOT of laundry will be done, and you realize your solution is out and you have no more liquid fabric softener on hand —- and no transportation to get to the store?
So I looked into my laundry room to see what I DID have on hand. And I had some Unstoppables that my wife had bought….. but these generally go into the wash.
So I contemplated and came up with this simple idea - melt the unstoppables to create a liquid and *poof* problem solved!
STEP ONE: Use a double boiler to melt the Unstoppables.
Now I don’t have a metal bowl, which is generally used in situations like this (think melting chocolate) but I did find a glass bowl that fit perfectly into my saucepan.
Stirring constantly, and it did take a while, I finally got them mostly melted.
STEP TWO: add hot water!!!!
While waiting for them to melt I microwaved a cup of water for 5 minutes. Being very careful (I put an oven mit on!) because the cup is VERY hot I slowly added some water to the melted Unstoppables, just to make sure everything was fully liquified.
Once this was complete I removed from heat.
STEP THREE: cool down solution
Still stirring constantly I added some ice cubes to help speed up the cooling process. The original recipe calls for one part liquid detergent and 2 parts water so I was going to be adding cold water to it anyway!
Once it was cooler, but still using my oven mit, I added the liquid to my plastic container.
FINAL STEP: at this point it’s as good as having liquid detergent! So all I do now is fill the container with cold water and *PRESTO*….. reusable sheets are full and ready to get to work! Just like me!!
Always look around and improvise. You never know what you might be able to come up with!

I love when Mother Nature waters my garden for me. It’s less for me to remember!
Today I planted
- yellow squash
- spaghetti squash
- cayenne peppers
Now I watch the sprinkler to make sure everything is getting watered well, shower, and pass out!
